The Benefits of Stress Management Training

A lot of people think stress management is a no-brainer, and they don' t see the value of stress management training. Their point of view is that everybody has stress, and everybody knows it can kill you if you don' t take care of it - so watch a little TV, take a day off, or have a couple of beers and relax. You don' t need some stress management training, just a little time off.

Sometimes they express their opinions about stress management training forcefully and loudly, or while pounding the desk with a fist. They may know some stress management techniques, but perhaps stress management training could teach them some effective stress management techniques.

How Effective Stress Management Works

When you are stressed, your body releases certain hormones, like adrenaline, that prepare you to meet a threat of some kind. Our bodies are designed to meet the threat, and then it' s over, we relax, and those hormones are used up.

Unfortunately, in modern society, the threats never go away. Our stressors are constant job stress, family stress, and environmental stress from constant light and noise. Because the threats never go away, we keep producing those stress hormones. Stress hormones are catabolic hormones, which means that they use up the energy and resources our cells need for health.

Effective stress management techniques help us to use up or get rid of the stress hormones. If we enter a deeply relaxed state, we secrete anti-stress hormones called endorphins, which help heal us.

Techniques Learned in Stress Management Training

Some of the more effective stress management techniques have to be learned and practiced. Visualization, breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and meditative techniques are difficult to apply unless you are taught how to do them and have the opportunity to practice them.

These techniques often involve reaching an alpha state, a very relaxed state of mind, and some people call this self-hypnosis. Deep relaxation allows your body to use up or get rid of stress chemicals so that you are physically de-stressed. Kicking the dog or having an extra beer doesn' t do that; instead, it only provides a temporary dip in the stress hormones circulating in your blood, and your body just releases new ones.

Where to Find Stress Management Training

You can find stress management training that fits your individual style from employers that offer classes, community centers, community colleges, and hospitals. If you prefer to learn one-on-one, many counselors and life coaches offer stress management training.

If you learn best by yourself, you can access stress management training through the Internet, classes on television, videos, and other audio visual media.

Stress management training is the best way to learn some stress management techniques. It' s well worth the time you invest in learning effective stress management.
