Retirement and Nursing Homes - What Your Aging Parents Need

There will come a day in nearly everybody' s life when you make a transition to a managed care center. Your parents need to be emotionally strong to make a smooth move from their home of many years to a retirement and nursing home. Ensure that you do not just bombard them with the news, but rather involve them in the decision making process. Prepare them for this in an adult to adult conversation:

1. Try your best to initiate a good conversation regarding their dreams, fears and other feelings after retirement. Enquire about everything that interests them - and try to weave along the unsuitability of their staying at home alone and uncared for.

2. Always talk like adults talks with one another. It does not matter what you talk about, just speak with confidence and have respect for the other person' s point of view. Give a very logical reason on how you have reached this decision.

3. Always ask for their opinion. Show it logically and voice how your concern for their well-being prompted this action.

4. Another great way of getting the ball rolling is to highlight the advantages and disadvantages that a retirement and nursing home has over staying alone. The first thing is definitely companionship. Then there is the possibility of having other things to do such as playing cards, chess, writing, knitting, reading club, etc that can be initiated in retirement and nursing homes.

5. Parents can be very much like your five year old - stubborn and horribly sharp tongued when needled. Do not take anything to heart about what they say - because most likely they are doing so because they are scared about this change in their lives - and they actually may be dreading it.

6. Be reasonable with them - ask them to give you alternatives to retirement and nursing homes, if they do not want to move. The alternatives should be reasonable, and should not involve their staying alone at home since it could be very dangerous for all concerned.

7. Get the parent or parents see a doctor who will recommend round-the-clock care. Be very careful about the reasons you mention when you send them to doctor. They should never get to think that they are unwanted or that you would want to get rid of them.

8. Be sure that you spend as much time possible with the parents as long as they are with you, as well as in the retirement and nursing homes after they start living there.
