One of the newest waves in all of fruit' s storied industry is the mangosteen experience. This is because of the incredible wealth of nutrients and overall health power that is located within one of the fruits. Apparently, the mangosteen has properties that include anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-bacterial enzymes. There are a variety of nutrients and vitamins within the fruit that help create an overall sense of health and quality, not to mention the natural great taste of the Southeast Asian fruit. The mangosteen experience has become synonymous with good health.
Beginnings
The mangosteen experience begins with learning about the fruit itself. Discovered in Southeast Asia, specifically the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas, the mangosteen is surprisingly not a mango nor is it related to the mango. Since its discovery, the mangosteen has been moved to Hawaii and is being produced there for wider distribution. The entire fruit, however, is not available on the continental United States as of yet due to trade laws and fumigation problems. There are frozen and canned versions of the mangosteen that are available there instead, creating a mangosteen experience for anyone willing to try it.
There is a lot of enthusiasm for the fruit, especially among those people native to Southeast Asia. The overall consensus of the grower and producer is, however, that the mangosteen is not worth the fuss. It is apparently very finicky and particular in terms of production and can be quite complicated to grow. The tree is not familiar with other environments, nor does it adjust well to new ones. This creates problems as some trees succumb very quickly to minor changes in temperature and end up producing a single fruit for the effort. This is an occurrence that many growers do not find to be worth it. There are exceptions, however, as some greenhouses are known to grow mangosteen trees with little effort.
There is only one variety of mangosteens for the mangosteen experience, at least for most. There was one larger type of mangosteen rumored to be available in the Sulu Islands, but this fruit has never survived a transport. The flesh is more acidic and the flavor is much more obvious, too. The mangosteen is said to be ultra-tropical which denotes its predilection to temperatures between 40-100 degrees Fahrenheit; anything below or above that temperature range results in the death of the tree. The mangosteen experience, for many, is not worth the hassle of maintaining the fruit.
