Live Blood Conditions

Anisocytosis is seen in the blood when the erythrocytes show abnormal variations in size. These red blood cells showing more than normal variation in size can occur in iron deficiency, liver involvement and anemia.
Ovalcytes are red blood cells that are shaped like an egg (oval shaped). Ovalcytes are seen most abundantly in cases of a condition known as hereditary elliptocytosis. Persons with this condition exhibit 80 to 90 percent of their red blood cells in the elliptical form. The appearance of these cells is most commonly associated with iron, folic acid, and B12 deficiency, and hormonal imbalance.
Echinocytes are red blood cells which have lost their characteristic shape and have become rough and thorny in appearance. Dying red blood cells should not be more than one percent. Excessive amounts of Echinocytes with tubules present indicate kidney stress.

Acanthocytes are irregularly spiculated erythrocyte of normal or slightly reduced size, with 3 to 12 spicules of varying lengths along the periphery of the cell membrane. These are seen in congenital abetalipoproteinemia, hemolytic anemia, hepatitis of the newborn, vitamin E deficiency, and hypercholesterolemia. The occurrence of Acanthocytes suggests malfunction of the liver and spleen which contributes to cell membrane maintenance.
Poikilocytes are abnormally shaped erythrocyte. These red blood cells have
an increase tendency to hemolyze since the cell membranes contain unsaturated fats creating an odd shaped cell with membrane corrugation, looking like "bottle caps." Hemolysis is the rupture of erythrocytes with release of hemoglobin into the plasma. Shistocytes is the term used to describe cell fragments. Exposure to high concentrations of chemical agents such as arsenic, lead, benzene, nitrites, and potassium chlorate can lead to destruction of erythrocytes.

Chylous material (Chylomicrons) are spherical particles with a core of triglycerides surrounded by a layer of phospho-lipids, cholesterol, and apolipoproteins. They are found in intestinal lymphatic and blood during and after meals. The presence of chylomicrons in the blood following a 12-hour fast indicates a condition known as hyperlipo-proteinemia. This condition can lead to accelerated coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, enlargement of the liver and spleen, and glucose intolerance.
