Free Radicals and Antioxidants
- How does Vital Produx's Vital Super Antioxidant help the body become a better free radical fighter?
- While other antioxidants on the market supply the body with antioxidant nutrients, Vital Produx's Vital Super Antioxidant actually boosts the body's own free radical fighting ability. This is done by supplying the body with SOD precursors to facilitate the production of SOD.
- What is SOD?
- Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD) is the best known and perhaps most important of the antioxidant enzymes. It converts very harmful free radicals super oxide to the less active peroxide, which then can be further converted by other antioxidant enzymes into water. SOD is very difficult to absorb from supplements. Based on research, we found that by supplying the body with SOD precursors, or building blocks, the body could produce its own SOD. In this way, we have taken a more natural, more complete approach to fighting free radicals.
- What are proanthocyanidins?
- Proanthocyanidins are a class of antioxidant nutrients to which also bioflavinoids, rutin, and tannins belong. All of those nutrients are powerful antioxidants, but the research of Dr. Jacques Moscalier shows that the most active members of this class are the ones which he refers to as pycnogenol.
|
- What is pycnogenol?
- Pycnogenol, now a registered trademark in America, was used by Moscalier as a generic term, referring to the proanthocyanidins from any source, including from grape seed and maritime pine bark. Most of his studies were actually done with the grape seed extract, and he has shown that grape seed has a greater antioxidant effect than pine bark. Many of the companies promoting pine bark, as well as the information in Richard Passwater's booklet, The New Superantioxidant Plus, are basing their claims on scientific studies of grape seed, not pine bark. To our knowledge, and according to other well known researchers, such as Michael Murray, there are no published studies on the pine bark extract.
